Two-day Tour of Estonia still with record number of teams

Despite the fact that Tour of Estonia had to be reduced to two stages yet again because of low budget, the number of teams who are coming to the third Tour of Estonia is still record high.

After the announcement that the tour will consist of two days instead of three, only two teams decided that they will not be coming to Tour of Estonia this year. 18 teams, including 2 pro-continental teams, 13 continental teams and 3 national teams remained. Last record for the number of participating teams dates from 2013 when 17 teams participated.

“The reason for the cancelling of the first stage in the Old Town of Tallinn is the same as last year – bad financial situation and lack of outside funding,” said race director Indrek Kelk.

But two legendary stages still remain. On Friday, 29th of May, Tour of Estonia will start from Tallinn, at the front of Hotel Ülemiste and finishes in the City centre of Tartu. On Saturday, 30th of May, Tartu GP in the City of Tartu will decide the winner of Tour of Estonia.

“Strongest teams are obviously the two pro-continental teams Novo Nordisk and Rusvelo but also German teams and the Danish team,” added Kelk. He noted that Estonian national team should also be strong.

Tour of Estonia takes place on the 29th and 30th of May and is also a prelude to the biggest cycling event in the Eastern-Europe 34th Tartu Rattaralli, taking place on the 31st of May, where best riders from Tour of Estonia compete alongside thousands of everyday cyclists.
