The last weekend of May brings professional cyclists to the roads of Estonia! On the last weekend of May, there will be a professional two-day men's cycling tour Tour of Estonia and a one-day Ladies Tour of Estonia for women.
The Tour of Estonia will take place on two days this year: on May 26, the route takes riders from Tallinn to Tartu, and on May 27, you can see the pros on the city circuits of Tartu. The women's one-day race will take place on May 27 around the city of Tartu and on city circuits before the men's race.
According to the race director Indrek Kelk, the competition is primarily a good breeding ground for Estonians, who can prove themselves in the professional cyclists' race of the UCI calendar of the International Cyclists' Union. "A lot of riders have shown themselves from a good side here and have caught the wind on their wings. Last year, the promising Madis Mihkels took the Tallinn-Tartu stage win on the cobbled climb of Lossi Street, which was very impressive considering the competition. Now you can cheer for the man already in the professional races of the World Tour calendar," says Kelk.
Also, in Kelk's opinion, the women's race, which, unfortunately, has not yet become as popular as the men's, cannot be considered less important. "We are organizing the women's race for only the second year, but already last year it was clear how important an event it really is. Unfortunately, our female riders do not have many opportunities to race together with other women, and what could be better than coming to the podium in front of the home audience, as Kristel Sandra Soonik, who took second place last year, did," states Kelk.
As Tour of Estonia don't have live TV coverage this year you can get all the information about the races through Tour of Estonia social media channels on Facebook and Instagram. |
