Frenchman Barbier won the first stage of Tour of EstoniaIsrael Cycling Academy’s rider Rudy Barbier won the first stage of this year’s Tour of Estonia, the Tallinn-Tartu GP (187 km). Quite soon after the start five men got away from the others: Rait Ärm (National Team Estonia), Wojciech Sykala (Poland, Wibatech Merx 7R), Viesturs Luksevics (Latvia, Amore & Vita – Prodir), Isac Lundgren (National Team Sweden) and Sam Brand (Great Britain, Team Novo Nordisk).
The gap between the leaders and peloton stayed around a couple of minutes for the majority of the race. About 20 kilometers before the finish the peloton caught the breakaway riders and it all came down to group finish. French rider Rudy Barbier (Israel Cycling Academy) won the tight finish ahead of Czech Daniel Babor (Tufo Pardus Prostejov) and Italian Andrea Peron (Team Novo Nordisk).
„Our plan was to get the stage win and stay as the overall leader. It was really hard today and I would like to thank my teammates who helped me a lot,“ said Barbier.
After yesterday’s prologue and today’s Tallinn-Tartu GP, the general classification’s leader is still Barbier’s teammate Matthias Brändle (AUT). Barbier is in second place and Pole Maciej Paterski (Wibatech Merx 7R) is third.
